ARTIST INTERVIEW: Sarah Buscho and Marina Storm of Earth Tu Face
Earth Tu Face began with two herbalists, a garden, and focus on creating a purely plant-based 100% natural skincare line, edible and free of toxins or synthetic compounds. Nature is the inspiration and guiding force behind the line, specifically, looking at how ecosystems work, how solutions are created from what is available and the beauty and harmony happening there naturally. Win-win solutions are always available and through that lens the best beauty products are formed.
Sarah Buscho and Marina Storm were both born, raised and currently reside in the Bay Area, California. Both come from gardening families and have innate love for plants and nature. They met while studying clinical western herbalism during a three-year program in Berkeley. We spoke to them about their creativity and inspiration.
What is your background and how have your past experiences fed into your art?
Marina and I met becoming clinical herbalists during a three year program and bonded over the fact that we were the only two herbalists in the program who had a large pieces of land where we were growing big volumes of medicinal plants. We were making medicine both internally and externally applied (read: healing salves, creams, mists, tinctures and extracts) from fresh garden plants. That brought us together. Initially we set up a bay area herbal exchange, similar to a CSA, for herbalist and clinics in the area. We were also using plants from the garden to make skin care products. We didn’t know at the time the skincare products were going to be what we would focus on. It was an organic process, one that we fell into, we simply started working together and then it evolved and evolved.
Do you feel that your environment feeds into work and if so, what makes your work distinctively Californian?
Marina and I are native northern californians. It all comes back to nature for us. We love looking at how ecosystems work, specifically how solutions are created from what is available. We are inspired by the harmony, complex simplicity, and peaceful beauty in nature. The outdoors have always been an integral part of our lives and creative process. We try to meet for a one hour hike everyday to discuss upcoming projects, meetings, and what needs to be done in the company. It is a time where our best ideas flow naturally.
What are your top 3 studio essentials?
Our top three studio essentials are our garden grown flower petals, botanical extracts and cold pressed organic oils, + glass bottles and jars.
