ARTIST INTERVIEW: Sarah Buscho of Earth Tu Face

In 2010 Earth Tu Face began with two herbalists, a garden, and focus on creating a purely plant-based 100% natural skincare line, free of toxins or synthetic compounds. They have grown their skincare line from the ground up, intentionally choosing plants that heal, restore and rejuvenate skin cells. Every Earth Tu Face formula is original, created and tested by their team, on real people — never on animals. They are the best of the best. All of our products are made from organic, high quality, and food-grade ingredients sourced by us with the best natural compounds the earth has to offer.

We spoke to Earth Tu Face co-founder Sarah Buscho, about what inspires her.

How do you find balance between practicality and beauty in your creations?

Love this concept. We strive for balance between beauty and practicality in every product we create.

To us, every product has to be practical for the person’s use in everyday life but also practical for the earth. We feel a product is beautiful when every part of the ingredients’ sourcing and efficacy for the skin makes sense. Sandalwood essential oil is beautiful + an effective skin healer, but it’s also practical to use because we work with a co-op in Australia to get the sandalwood essential oil in a renewable way. We also work toward using packaging that is design forward and clean but not at the expense of the environment by using plastic bottles. Working with nature makes this balance easy because it is intrinsically beautiful, a pleasure for the senses, as well as efficient and intelligent. Skincare that is plant-based uses powerful essential oils and ingredients such as rose, blue chamomile, and virgin coconut oil that are just as fragrant and pleasing to the eye as they are effective for healing and nourishing the skin. Every ingredient that we include in our products is there for a specific therapeutic reason. We do not use fillers of any kind, meaning every ingredient in our products is an “active” ingredient. We think this is a balance that all companies should strive for in order to cut down on waste and push the boundaries of what is possible to create the most effective products for humans and our environment. Harmony feels good.

What are your most important artistic tools?

Stubbornness when pushed to accept the way things are, and the ability to reflect on the needs of this time and use it as a driving force to create things that unify us all in the fight for good changes. Pushing the boundaries of what is possible and only compromising when it is the only way forward.

How is your work inspired by or influenced by nature and your surroundings?

Nature is a part of everything we do from sourcing fresh medicinal ingredients from our garden and other farms to turning away from one-use wasteful packaging so that we can leave a smaller footprint. Being outside, mushroom foraging, harvesting herbs, hiking, and picnicking is where we I am able to think most clearly and gain the most joy. It is our ultimate inspiration at Earth TuFace, and teaches us to appreciate the connection between all living things, no matter how small. And nature is inspiring. There is no waste in nature’s wild ecosystems. Every byproduct is used by another organism. It’s that mentality that helps drive the creation of our products.

Do you have any objects you like to keep around you as inspiration? What are they?

Natural elements that bring the outside in, keep me grounded, and inspire me to recognize the sheer power of the earth — like fresh cut flowers from our garden, rocks buffed smooth by the sea, crystals and prisms which catch and manipulate light, fossils that remind me of how young we are as a species and yet how far we’ve come. House plants! Animals! Baths! Being surrounded by life keeps creativity flowing.

What is a new idea you have been working with recently?

We recently formulated a collection of beauty teas with the L.A.-based salon, Olive & June! The teas are available now and come in two delicious botanical flavors that both contain horsetail greenery and other nutrient-dense plants to help support healthy nails and hair. We are also launching a special collaboration Belly Oil for pregnancy and postpartum which conditions stretched skin and creates a relaxing aromatherapeutic experience to boot!
