ARTIST INTERVIEW: Michelle Chaplin of Ultra Violet Kids

Inspired by her daughter and mini-muse Violet, designer Michelle Chaplin has set out to create clothing that parents will love and their kids will love to wear. Ultra Violet Kids is forward fashion for the sophisticated baby and toddler – fun, playful, full of color and pattern. In addition to gorgeous design, the Michelle seeks to give back to the young ones that inspire her. For every turban or skull cap purchased, Ultra Violet Kids donates a turban or skull cap to a baby, kid or teen going through medically induced hair loss.

We spoke to Michelle about her inspirations and design.

What is your background and how have your past experiences fed into your art (or craft)?
I have been designing clothing as far back as I can remember. I left traditional high school to enroll in an art high school, I went to art college and got my degree in Fashion Design. For the past 15 years I have worked in many areas of design, I have had my own companies, created collections for others, worked as a technical designer, a head designer, a outerwear designer. Doing my own collections and running my own company with my own vision has made me the happiest. Ultra Violet Kids is a complete labor of love. The inspiration behind this brand is my beautiful daughter, whose fiery personality, sense of adventure, and love of color continue to inspire me daily.

Do you feel that your environment feeds into work and if so, what makes your work distinctively Californian?
I do believe that your environment plays a large role in how you design. Being from Southern California and accustomed to warm weather, I tend to design with that lifestyle in mind. Our world here is so bright, colorful and full of energy, it inspires me to make clothing to fit that.

What are your top 3 studio essentials?
1. A large mobile pattern table with a bottom shelf to store the rolls of fabric I am currently working with
2. Beautiful natural light
3. A mood board up on the wall to see all of the things I am inspired by seasonally
