ARTIST INTERVIEW: Jess Hannah of J. Hannah Jewelry
J. Hannah is a jewelry line based in Downtown Los Angeles. Designer Jess discovered her love for jewelry early on, after inheriting a few of her grandmother’s vintage pieces. Elegant and exceptionally crafted, they held the charm of a different era, becoming pieces of constant inspiration.
Jess’s work focuses on craft and timelessness — it is jewelry for living in and living with, points of connection and classic beauty for the modern era. Her pieces are meant to never be taken off, and all jewelry is hand made to order. Pieces are made from solid 14k gold or sterling silver, and all stones are ethically sourced and conflict-free.
How do you find a balance between practicality and beauty in your creations?
J. Hannah is fine jewelry that can be worn every day. It’s important if you are making a special purchase for it to seamlessly integrate with your own personal style. It’s a precious ornament that is destined to become an heirloom piece. Cost per wear is carefully considered.
Do you have a favorite creation, artwork, or design of your own?
I’m proud of our newest Glacé collection, it’s physically substantial, but optically light. It offers a new aspect of modernism to the line as a whole.
What do you do, or where do you go to seek fresh ideas or renewed creative energy?
I often look to the past for design inspiration—many of our pieces are a nod to history. There are many traditions aligned with jewelry that are not just decorative. Historically, signet jewelry represented a physical marker of identity — used like a stamp to mark documents or add a seal of significance. I also find a wealth of inspiration in furniture and architectural design, whether I’m looking at Craigslist or 1st Dibs.
Did you have any mentors or important creative influences?
I discovered my love for jewelry early on, after inheriting some of my grandmother’s vintage pieces. They embodied the charm of a different era, which piqued my interest in the craft, elegance, and timelessness I now seek to emulate in my designs. The Clara collection pays homage to her, and outlines the core of J. Hannah’s origin mythos.
