ARTIST INTERVIEW: Gabriela and Tere of Gabriela Artigas & Company
Company: Gabriela Artigas & Company
Artists: Gabriela and Tere Artigas
Gabriela Artigas & Company is a jewelry line founded in 2008 by sisters Gabriela and Tere Artigas, Mexico City natives based in Los Angeles, California.
The jewelry and expanded line of home accessories range from delicately minimalist to boldly sculptural drawing inspiration from their heritage, familial background in architecture and design, and an enthusiasm for the arts.
Designed and made in LA, each collection is held to the highest standards and produced in limited quantities to ensure quality and authenticity. Each piece is personal with a soul intrinsic in its structure, and intended to be used every day and stand the test of time.
Describe the path that led you to the work you do now
Gabriela: Ever since I was eight, I knew that I wanted to be a designer in fashion. I became a jewelry designer when fate met with opportunity, and a necklace I designed for our Mother literally stopped a woman on the street who wanted to know who made the piece and where to buy it.
Tere: I was always drawn to beautiful things with a simple and clean aesthetic. Things that can be worn or incorporated into the home in an elegant and natural way. Jewelry was a natural extension of this and it’s great that I get to work with my sister.
Did you have any artists or creative people in your family? If so, how did they influence you?
Our grandfather was an architect in Mexico City. We design our jewelry with architectural principles in mind. Alex, our brother, is a furniture designer and pieces that he made can be seen in our Los Angeles store.
Do you have any objects you like to keep around you as inspiration? What are they?
We love nature and find inspiration in beautiful surroundings. We always have plants and flowers in our store, and in our homes. We take so much pleasure from finding well-designed, pretty objects like ceramics, brass objects, lovely little things for the home that we often display in our store.
Do you have a favorite creation, artwork, or design of your own?
We love the Infinite Tusk earring. It’s our classic, signature piece and still one of our most popular. If you were to ask us separately, Gabriela loves the Lunula Earring which has such a unique, cool design. I really love the Cigar Band Ring with Diamonds, the ring is masculine, but the diamonds make it more feminine like a line of light.
Do you think community is important to creativity? If so, how?
We think community is important to creativity because it’s very meaningful to have support that accepts and encourages you to express yourself as an individual.
