ARTIST INTERVIEW: Crystal Joy of Joyous Organics

Crystal Joy is the woman behind Joyous Organics, a deliciously natural handmade skincare line. Crystal grew up in Huntington Beach, California and is now a resident of Mammoth Lakes in the eastern Sierras. She is lovingly raising four children, who were the original reason for her making anything in the first place. Active in the community, she spends many hours in her kids classrooms, along with donating her time and products to other charity organizations. Her favorite thing to do is spend time outdoors with her family doing things like snowboarding, hiking, fishing, and soaking in the hot springs, to name a few. Her loving and outgoing personality shines through in her products, and her desire to provide the best for her kids drives the business forward.

What is your background and how have your past experiences fed into your art?
I’m a mother of four, and my frustrations grew trying to find safe, organic body products for them – so I started making my own.

Do you feel that your environment feeds into work and if so, what makes your work distinctively Californian?
Absolutely. California is a desert, especially dry at 8500ft high where I live in beautiful Mammoth Lakes. It’s a necessity having an excellent hydrating moisturizer that keeps your body smooth & thankful all year round.
What do you do, or where do you go to seek fresh ideas or renewed creative energy?
Living in the mountains, there’s certainly no lack of beauty to help inspire you daily. I’m also inspired by my children, their curiosity and different personalities all combine together into so much happiness, and we have such a wonderful time exploring the surrounding area.
Why is it important to you to show and share your work to a larger community?
We are exposed to so many toxins in our environment on a daily basis. While most people realize what we put into our bodies is very important, not much importance is put on what we put on our skin. For example, did you know that it takes less than 30 seconds for something to be absorbed through your skin into your bloodstream?

What are your top 3 studio essentials?
My mixer, organic ingredients, and my talented children who not only inspired myself to create this brand but are also my illustrators on my products.
