Laura Schoorl is co-founder of Pansy underwear and designer of her own eponymous clothing and accessories collection. She lives and works in Oakland, California. Born from a need for comfy and ethical undies, their organic cotton is grown and milled domestically and their underwear are designed and sewn locally. Schoorl’s newest project is a collaboration with Brittany Cole Bush called Shepherdess; they are curating cozy local sheep and goat hides for the home.
What is your background and how have your past experiences fed into your art?
I studied rhetoric and planned on a law career. I never imagined myself working in design which helps me not take my work too seriously.
Do you feel that your environment feeds into work and if so, what makes your work distinctively Californian?
It must. I’ve lived in California my whole life. I try to make things that are easy to wear and use. I place emphasis on aesthetics, sustainability, and comfort. I want the pieces I make to be joyful.
What are your top 3 studio essentials?
Hot tea, natural light, music.
