Materia Lumina is a collection of custom tableware and ceremonial ceramics inspired by the infinite elegance, simplicity and healing essence of Nature. Founded by designer and energy medicine healer Eefje Theeuws, Materia Lumina pieces can be found gracing the place settings at Big Sur’s Post Ranch Inn and Aubergine at L’Auberge Carmel by the Sea as well as in specialty showrooms and shops along the California coast and beyond. Ranging from custom dinnerware to objects for healing and ceremony, each Materia Lumina piece is a one of a kind, made by hand and infused with spirit and essential healing energies. We spoke with Theeuws about inspiration and California.
What is your background and how have your past experiences fed into your art?
My background is in high-end Architecture, Interiors and Landscape Design as well as Energy Medicine, so I have a long-standing love affair with creating homes, interiors and gardens that are beautiful, inspiring and healing. For me, what has always been important in regards to life and work, is a sense of elegant simplicity and calm. The Materia Lumina ceramic collection comes directly out of this desire to offer beauty and grace via design as well as a longing to get back to a more hand-made and natural way of life. It all started with me wanting to make my own tableware, really…so it’s a funny thing to think back on now since I have now made so many pieces for so many people! It truly has all been a great great blessing to be able to work with the earth in this way and in may ways I feel I have only just scratched the surface of this very ancient practice. I look forward to what is coming.
Do you feel that your environment feeds into work and if so, what makes your work distinctively Californian?
Yes, very much so. After completing some in depth Energy Medicine studies in the California Mojave Desert some time ago, I realized how much I loved the land there and decided it was time to head that way and see if I could make a new home there. After many years in both San Francisco and Monterey, I was ready to head south, out of the cold and foggy coastal zone and into the sun, the mountains and a much bigger sense of space. There is something about the vibration of all this vast earth energy here in the desert along with the great big open sky and all of the sun, moon and star rays that beam down here that make this a very special place to live and create. I had no idea that the mountains, especially, would be such a influence for me but they continue to amaze and inspire my life each and every day. And my work is Californian because of that…because of the direct physical and energetic connection to this land, these mountains, this flora and this fauna and actually having the space and taking the time to connect to it. Also, the type of Energy Medicine I practice creates strong ties to the land itself through earth-honoring Ceremonies and other healing practices, so the essence of the California landscape where I live and work actually becomes directly woven into my life and all the things that are created in it because of these practices.
