ARTIST INTERVIEW: Lauri Kranz of Edible Gardens
Edible Gardens LA builds, plants and sustains organic vegetable gardens. Founder Lauri Kranz teaches gardening at local schools and with her company Edible Gardens LA, helps chefs, families and anyone with an interest in having a home garden grow lush gardens full of organic vegetables. We spoke to her about her work and background.
What is your background and how have your past experiences fed into your art?
I am a musician as well as a gardener. I found gardening after many years of making music. I love the music of gardens; the sound of the bees, the wind moving through the leaves. Both music and gardening are artistic endeavors. I think there is a wildness in the gardens that I build and tend that is directly related to years of making music.
Do you feel that your environment feeds into work and if so, what makes your work distinctively Californian?
We are so lucky, here in Southern California, to be able to grow food 365 days a year. There are very few places where that is possible. We have the luxury of eating locally and in season throughout the year. Each season has it’s own beauty and bounty. The winter citrus season feels very Californian; blood oranges, tangerines, lemons and limes all ready for the picking.
What are your top 3 studio essentials?
My studio is the garden. A good hat, an apron with pockets for tools and a garden tarp are my essentials.
